Our top 5 essential oils for stress and anxiety

Our world can be a difficult place to live, and in the current climate stress and anxiety are at an all time high.
Aromatherapy is a great tool for relieving stress and anxiety, whether you experience it occasionally or day to day. Essential oils not only smell incredible but their aromas can have a hugely positive effect on our mind, body and spirit. You can add a few drops of your favourite oils into a diffuser, add them into your bath, spray them onto your pillow or apply them topically onto your skin.
First of all, what are essential oils? Essential oils are natural extracts obtained from plants, they contain the plants scent and flavour, as well as therapeutic properties.
Here are my top 5 essential oils for relieving stress and anxiety.
Frankincense
Frankincense has been used extensively throughout human history, and has played an important role in religious and domestic life in many ancient civilisations. It is still used today in ceremony and is one of the most popular oils in aromatherapy use.
Frankincense is a deep, grounding and calming oil that helps to bring in feelings of peace and overall well-being. It helps to enhance breathing and soothe respiratory conditions, which makes it popular for use in meditation and yoga.

Ylang Ylang
Ylang Ylang is a floral scented essential oil which is derived from the steam distillated star shaped flowers of the Cananga Odorata botanical. An uplifting oil which helps to calm the nervous system and help to bring in joy, happiness and sensuality. I like to refer to this oil as the sunshine oil as it has the ability to lift emotional exhaustion and lift the spirits.
Rose Geranium
Rose Geranium essential oil comes from the herbaceous Pelargonium Graveolens shrub and has a grounding, floral scent which resembles Roses.
It is a beautifully balancing oil which helps to promote emotional stability, and transform negative feelings into more positive ones.  It helps to promote emotional healing and self love, and is especially good for women.
Lavender
Lavender flower and its essential oil has been used medicinally for centuries, and is perhaps one of the most well known essential oils used in aromatherapy today. Most people are familiar with its deep, floral, herbaceous aroma.
As well as a whole host of physical benefits, Lavender has a calming effect on the nervous system, making it an excellent oil to use in times of stress and anxiety. Lavender helps to quiet the mind, allowing us to bring in more peace and focus. Used during the day it allows us to feel uplifted and relaxed, yet using it before bed helps us to drift into a peaceful sleep.

Bergamot
Bergamot oil is extracted from the rinds of citrus fruit that grow on bergamot orange trees. If you’re a fan of Earl Grey tea, you’re already enjoying the distinctive taste of bergamot, which is used to flavour it.
Bergamot is a beautifully uplifting and fresh essential oil which has both calming and uplifting abilities. This allows it help dissipate anxious feelings while simultaneously providing cleansing and purifying benefits. It is great for balancing body, mind and emotions.
